A proposal has been submitted for the construction and operation of a Renewable Energy Centre (REC) on the former Templeborough Steelworks on Sheffield Road, Rotherham.
Developer Rolton Kilbride has submitted the application to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council for the centre that will provide 23
MW/h of electricity and heat.
Up to 42 new jobs could be created by the Energy Centre, which would recover renewable energy from residual waste after all recycling has taken place. The heat and electricity could be exported to commercial energy users in Rotherham. This would benefit local businesses through reducing their operating costs, supporting their economic viability and potential growth.
Managing waste locally could potentially reduce waste management and transport costs for the Local Authority, enabling funds to be redirected to other services.
As part of the application, Rolton Kilbride has undertaken a full Environmental Impact Assessment, which will be examined in detail during the process.

It is also the beginning of the local authority’s own consultation process, so there is ample opportunity for people to respond. We have also produced a full set of FAQs which can be viewed by visiting our website.
Rolton Kilbride held a public exhibition at the Magna Science Adventure Centre in March to set out the proposals.
If planning permission is granted, the energy centre could become operational in approximately three years.
